Cantiere SANGERMANI

Sangermani shipyard was founded at the end of the 19th century in Mulinetti, an eastern Ligurian village not far from Genoa. From the very beginning, this shipyard distinguished itself for its strategic choice to produce few work boats and to focus on the construction of yachts. In 1934, the Sangermani brothers decided to relocate the shipyard in Rapallo, where they launched about 40 beautiful yachts, among which we highlight the Samani I (a source of inspiration for several following motorsailers), Santa rita, Gipo II and especially the 22-mt Samani II sloop, that’s still sailing nowadays. In 1946, the Sangermani brothers moved to the current Cantieri Sangermani headquarter in Lavagna. Between the ‘50s and the ‘60s, Sangermani production achieved international recognition with the construction of several III Class RORC (Royal Oceanic Racing Club). The shipyard also built several boats for the Sports Sailing squad of the Italian Navy, such as: Chiar di Luna (10 mt, completed in 1950) and Artica II (12.90 mt, launched in 1956) that achieved many victories in several international races, thus contributing to make Sangermani a world-renowned manufacturer. Throughout the ‘70s, Italian yachting experience a huge evolution: larger boats were built, designed by famous yacht designer such as Laurent Giles, Sparkman & Stephens, German Frers, Carlo Sciarrelli etc... although more than half of the boats was built according to a Sangermani design. As from 1978, under the leadership of Cesare Sangermani Jr., the Lavagna-based manufacturer began using advanced composite materials for its hulls. Thanks to important collaborations with some of the leading industry experts, several sail and motor experimental prototypes were created, such as: Giorgio Falk’s Guia 2000 (13.60 mt), built in 1979 from a German Frers’ design and winner of the Giraglia Rolex Cup in 1979 and 1983, Mediterranenan champion for two consecutive years and winner of 1985 Brooklyn Cup with Pierre Sicouri and Paola Pozzolini (Transatlantic Race for 2-people crews). Articolo Quinto (10.50), built in 1980 in Kevlar and aeronautical balsa wood, and close to the “monococque” concept. Flash (9 mt), that achieved a second place in the 1984 Offshore world championship (II class) and Italian offshore champion in 1986 (III class). Rolly Go (15.64 mt) and Ottovolante (12.18 mt), the first Sangermani catamaran, launched in 1981. The quality of implemented materials, many of which come directly from aerospace industry, coupled with the continuous research for technology innovation based on experimental methods, greatly enhanced the shipyard’s quest for perfection in terms of equipment and construction. This led to the creation of unique yachts with excellent performances, as evidenced by the victories in the most important sailing event, from the Giraglia Rolex Cup to the Mediterranean Championship. Experimental techniques, from the W.E.S.T. System (used in 1986 to build many yachts, such as Secondo Pensiero, 19.50 mt; Dalu, 20.15 mt; Luja, 23 mt; and Wallygator, 25.12 mt) to the Xilon 3003 (used as from 2004) allowed for the implementation of state-of-the-art materials in a traditional construction method, thus naturally contributing to the modernization of the shipyard. Here we find models like the Sangermani 33 “Magica Dea” built in wood and carbon, that belongs to the Boroli family, promoter of the Achille Boroli Cup. Throughout the years, Sangermani also built motor yachts and boats, such as the historic Clinker (10 mt, 1996) that became a symbol of Sestri Levante city, Scilla (now Duchessa, 10 mt, 1966), Cala Junco (now Patinia, 13.72 mt, 1973). More recently, we find the motor yacht Secondo Pensiero (19.50 mt, 1987 lobster), the sports fisherman yacht Ebb Tide (15.00 mt, 1994) and several day-cruisers built between 2006 and 2008 (such as Again Again, Numero Zero and Raggio di Sole, all 9.99 mt).
