Carlo Sciarrelli, an Italian genius of boat design

Carlo Sciarrelli was born in Triste in 1934 and died in Trieste in 2006; son of a railwayman, he initially worked as a fireman in charge of shunting trains for the State Railways. Since he was a boy, he frequented the docks of the Yachting Club Adriaco, being fascinated by the boats. He begins to tack the Gulf of Trieste with a snipe, a drift that allows him to appropriate the secrets of navigation. A journey of knowledge begins for him, which will actually last a lifetime and as a perfect self-taught, he studies, analyzes, deepens with almost maniacal care, every aspect of the things that interest him. In 1959, his first job as a designer: he restored for himself a "flounder" built on the island of Krk in the 1930s, Aspasia. He feels ready, his studies, his analyzes have led him to find his own concept of synthesis from which he can and must start, to create the perfect boat, "God's boat". With hard-earned savings, he designed and built his first boat, Anfitrite, in 1960, followed by Aglaja in 1964. The boat did well and won almost all the regattas in which it participated. Thus began his story as a planner, architect, yacht designer. In his life he designed about 140 boats and more than 400 boats were built from his projects all over the world. Severe judge of himself, he had behind the desk, where he worked, a strip of paper listing the 138 names of his boats, only on some, however, there was an asterisk, where his project had achieved the perfect synthesis of utility and beauty . Among these, we recall projects that are still competitive such as SAGITTARIUS of the Navy which still competes at high levels today. and then gradually ASTARTE II, AURIGA, CHIRON, ATTICA, NABOBO II, TIZIANA IV, SANDRA II, ISABELLA, CHAPLIN and many many others. " The beautiful is not new, the new is not beautiful” he used to say. In fact, all of his work as a yacht designer has been characterized by the search for "beauty". As a profound connoisseur of the classics which he was, he aimed for the perfect synthesis of harmony and balance of form and functionality. In 1970 he published for Mursia The yacht, origin and evolution of the pleasure sailing vessel, the most read nautical text in our country.
