ECO 40 is the “zero emission” sailboat built by the ocean sailor Matteo Miceli within the requirements of Class40. Currently, it is the only sailboat designed to be totally self-sufficient while sailing, and it is suitable for both single and double-handed regattas, as well as to race with a crew. Thanks to the water turbines, solar panels, as well as to an electric engine able to guarantee 4 extendable hours of sailing at a speed of 6 knots, ECO40 does not pollute and does not consume any fuel. Its 12 square meters of photovoltaic panels built by Solbian Energie Alternative allow the ECO 40 to produce 2 kWs and be totally self-sufficient in terms of energy. In 2021, ECO 40 achieved the Wally record from Ventotene to Carthage.

ECO40

ECO40 is the “zero emission” sailboat built by the ocean sailor Matteo Miceli within the requirements of Class40. Currently, it is the only sailboat designed to be totally self-sufficient while sailing, and it is suitable for both single and double-handed regattas, as well as to race with a crew. Thanks to the water turbines, solar panels, as well as to an electric engine able to guarantee 4 extendable hours of sailing at a speed of 6 knots, Eco40 does not pollute and does not consume any fuel. Its 12 square meters of photovoltaic panels built by Solbian Energie Alternative allow the Eco40 to produce 2 kWs and be totally self-sufficient in terms of energy.   The engine is an electric prototype by Electro Adda, and it was created by engineers Igor Gioffi and Marco Bianucci, whereas the lithium batteries were supplied by Kaitek. After almost completing a world tour, Eco40 was entirely refitted in 2018, with: new Lorima mast, new bulb keel, centreboard, rudders and bushings; new Garmin electronics; new boom and bowsprit; new LED electric system. Moreover, in 2020 a new ZEN water maker was installed; new sails were added (mainsail in hand-tufted Spectra, jib and foresail in heavy Dacron, and gennaker). Eco40 also has one King Size bow cabin and a separate bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers.  

Class40

Eco40 was built in compliance with Class40 box rule, one of the most lively classes in the field of ocean races. Class40 boats are 100% safe, unsinkable, high performing monohull sailboats designed with a deck plan suitable for single or double-handed regattas. Class40 boats must stay within the following maximum sizes: 12.19 mt of length overall; 4.50 mt of full beam; 3.00 mt of draught. The maximum number of sails is limited to 8, and only the mainsail and jib can be made in the so-called “exotic materials”. Class40 association was founded in 2004 with the aim of filling the existing gap between the Mini Transat 6.50 and IMOCA Open 60. The Class40 is very active in Europe, with more than 500 sailboats built. In addition to ocean races, such as the Défi Atlantique and the Route du Rhum, the class organizes the Globe 40 La Grande Route, the double-handed round-the-world race (8 stages expected for 2021-2022 edition). In 2023 another round-the-world race in 5 stages will also set off: The Race Around.

Matteo Miceli's feats

Matteo Miceli is an ocean sailor used to extreme feats: in 2005 he built by himself the 20’ racing catamaran “Biondina Nera”, with which he achieved the world record for the ocean crossing from Dakar to Guadalupe (dual-handed with Andrea Gancia) with the time of 13 days, 13 hours, 58 minutes, 27 seconds. In 2007, still with Biondina Nera, he achieved another world record for a single-handed ocean crossing, from Canary Islands to Guadalupe, in 14 days, 17 hours and 52 minutes. Such record is still unbeaten and it allowed Miceli to win the “Sailor of the Year 2007” award. Both records were homologated by the WSSRC (World Speed Sailing Record Council). Between 2014 and 2015, he attempted the Roma Ocean World with Eco40, a single-handed “green” round-the-world sailing without any assistance and with 100% energy self-sufficiency; he managed to round three capes. When he set off for the round-the-world sailing, he only had on board a small tilting garden in coconut fibre, two chickens, a water maker and the electric engine “that was sealed because it had to be used only in case of extreme need”.

In 2021, she achieved the Wally record from Ventotene to Carthage with the time of 31 hours & 31 minutes, 39 minutes less than the previous record set in 2009.
